Making Christmas memories: A new printable for your family

The festive season is a whirlwind of excitement, sparkle, and special moments. Alongside the chaos of course. It’s potentially a time for creating Christmas memories that you and your children may cherish for years to come. Finding the right Christmas family activities that are both fun and meaningful can make all the difference. That’s why we are so excited to introduce our brand new printable: “My Christmas Story.”

Festive green-themed Christmas activities poster featuring holiday decorations, candy canes, and a "My Christmas Story" booklet for kids from kiddycharts.com.

We also know that Christmas isn’t the same for everyone too, and those with neurodivergent kids might find Christmas too much. So if that’s your family, then skip on by. There are loads of other activities in the printables section, and pick one that works for you and yours. Maybe the story generator we have might work for you?

Back to our new resource for those that are interested, this is designed to help your children capture their unique festive experience. It’s more than just an activity sheet; it’s a personal keepsake in the making. Let’s explore the sections of this printable and how you can get stuck in to the fun over Christmas.

Capture the moments in pictures

The first section of our printable encourages children to capture the season’s highlights through pictures. It provides dedicated spaces for drawing or sticking in photos of key events. These include “Our family portrait,” “Me and Santa,” “The best present I received,” and “Me under the Christmas tree.”

This activity helps children to reflect on their favourite parts of the celebration. It builds their sense of self and reinforces their place within the family unit. For younger children, drawing these scenes is a wonderful way to develop fine motor skills. For older kids, it’s a chance to practise their creativity and storytelling. Looking back on these pictures together will be a lovely record of Christmases together.

If you are able, you can add photographs here, as well as drawing: maybe even a mixture of both.

Reflecting on feelings and favourites

Moving beyond just these pictures of your Christmases in the past, the next sheet is a printable prompt for children to think more deeply about their experiences. It includes sections like “My favourite family tradition,” “What I am grateful for this year,” and “What I am looking forward to next year.”

These prompts are helpful for developing emotional intelligence. Encouraging gratitude helps to boost wellbeing and builds a positive outlook. Discussing family traditions can also help to strengthen family bonds and creates that important sense of belonging. Looking ahead to the new year also fosters hope and excitement for the future. These are simple but powerful Christmas family activities that nurture your children. As a counsellor, its important to be aware that small activities that we do together can have a bigger impact on our children.

Remembering that one special moment

The final activity page has a single, important prompt: “My most memorable moment of this season is…” This encourages your child to identify the one experience that truly stood out to them. It might be a quiet moment baking cookies, the excitement of opening a special gift, or a fun trip to see the Christmas lights. It is a lovely way to help[ us get to know our children, and understand what sticks in their memories. We can then bank that to help us work out what are kids enjoy for the future: rather than thinking we know. Our children someimes surprise us here 🤔

This act of reflection is also a good mindfulness exercise. It teaches children to savour experiences and identify what brings them happiness. Sharing these moments as a family can be incredibly heartwarming.

“My Christmas Story” is a simple, free, and effective way to make the festive season even more special. It helps you create a treasure trove of Christmas memories while supporting your child’s development and wellbeing.
