5 tips for keeping your child safe

The arrival of a new child is a joyous time for any parent, however, it can also be accompanied by feelings of trepidation, especially if you are a first-time parent. Navigating parenthood can be both challenging and rewarding and there are many things to consider when your newborn arrives.

Every parent wants to do the best for their child and caring for their well-being is a top priority. In this article, we will look at some ways parents can keep their child safe and cared for when they first arrive in the world.

Baby monitor

A baby monitor is an essential device to reassure parents their child is safe and sound while giving them the freedom to relax or tend to other matters.

When deciding which baby monitor to buy, look for features such as an integrated telecom system that will alert you to when your baby wakes or cries, and a talk-back function that will allow you to comfort your baby with the sound of your voice.

Infrared vision provides the ability to see your child in the dark while another great feature on a baby monitor is a lullaby function that can gently soothe your baby to sleep, making nighttime easier.

Car seat

Installing a good-quality car seat can give you peace of mind when traveling with your child in the car.

Make sure you choose an approved and tested car seat from a reputable manufacturer such as Diono and select one that is correct for your child’s age. It is also advisable to choose a car seat that will be suitable for the entire duration of your child’s usage.

Many car seats can be installed easily into your car, however, seek help from a professional car seat expert if you do not feel confident doing this yourself.

Crib safety

It is important to create a safe environment for your baby to sleep by making sure their crib is free of small or sharp objects such as safety pins or toy parts and any items which they could suffocate on. Install a tight-fitting mattress into the crib and remove any quilts, pillows or comforters as well as stuffed toys.

Make sure there are no hanging items such as wall art or a crib mobile they could pull on which could fall onto and injure your child.

Bathtime

When it comes to keeping your baby’s skin soft and healthy, make sure you check the temperature of the bathwater before it touches their skin. A good way to test the water is by putting your elbow in the water making sure it feels comfortably warm and not hot. If you are unsure, use a thermometer, aiming for around 100F.

You can also fit an anti-scalding device onto the bath faucets which will regulate the pressure of the hot and cold water preventing any extreme fluctuations in temperature. Remember to keep a hold of your child at all times.

Baby-Proofing

Baby-proof your house by installing baby gates at both ends of your staircase and putting child-proof latches on cabinets or drawers that store sharp objects or dangerous materials such as laundry detergent or bleach.

Baby-proof electrical outlets with outlet covers to prevent the risk of an electric shock. With these five tips, you can feel confident knowing your child will be safe at all times.
