We are staunch advocates of encouraging inclusivity and tolerance in children – frankly, who wouldn’t be! And have shared our family values poster recently in line with this. Today, we are celebrating Pride Month on the site – a little late but we’ve got there in the end. We have a little treat for you from the gorgeous book; Freeda the Frog and the Two Mommas Next Door. The pride activity sheets include a colouring sheets, and a wordsearch activity as well.
The story for the book centres around Freeda and her family meeting some new friends: Jessica and her two mommas, Morgan and Irene. The tadpoles have never had a friend with two mommas before, but they soon learn that it makes no difference. By getting to know Jessica’s two mommas, the tadpoles discover that families do not have to all look the same, and that all you need is love.
This book was released just in time for PRIDE month, to help show support for the community, and how important it is for children of LGBTQ+ parents to feel accepted and loved. The author felt that books like theirs can release some of the negative stereotypes that unfortunately still exist.
This book isn’t just for the LGBTQ+ community though, and is really geared for all children. Just like no two frogs look the same, no two parents or their families look the same. The book tries to help all kids understand that families are not ‘one size fits all’ and that there can be many different kinds of configurations of parenting. This book and the series in general aims to teach kids that families look different—encouraging awareness, empathy, & inclusivity. And inclusivity in kids books is pretty important.
The messages in the series are suitable for all parents, teachers, psychologists, and children, and are meant to be conversation starters about different types of families and some real-life ‘stuff.’
