Discover Children’s Story Centre is a place where magic really does happen as their new Axel Scheffler and Julia Donaldson exhibition brings 12 of their enchanting picture books with some of our favorite characters to life.

Opening to the public on Saturday 21 October 2017 – September 2018 the A World inside a Book – The Gruffalo, Dragons and other Creatures is something you just need to see. Sounds fun?

Quite a few of the most beloved characters in children’s literature will come together, and to life, on their joyful and imaginative adventures, for all to step into and discover Julia and Axel’s magical worlds.

You are invited to enter through a mystery porthole and:

Once upon a time there was a boy called Charlie Cook who curled up in a cosy chair and read his favourite book….

A World inside a Book – The Gruffalo, Dragons and other Creatures has books bursting into life:

  • The Smartest Giant in Town,
  • A Squash and a Squeeze,
  • Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book,
  • Monkey Puzzle,
  • Tiddler,
  • Room on the Broom,
  • The Highway Rat,
  • Zog,
  • The Gruffalo,
  • The Snail and the Whale,
  • Stick Man,and
  • Superworm.

Their exhibition includes ideas to set off your child’s imagination including:

  • A scaled down town for children to feel like giants (we are sure they will be thrilled about that);
  • A humungous cow to feel tiny and squeeze around (super fun);
  • The Highway Rat’s cave with cave paintings and creatures in rocks;
  • Rock hopping through the Monkey Puzzle jungle;
  • Activities with a frog, a bird, a cat, a dog and a witch, and
  • Dressing up to take your seat on the broom with The Room On The Broom.

It’s time to go on an adventure! Take the bridge, and walk over the sparkly river from the wonderful Stick Man or visit the super dark forest where a full size Gruffalo hides.  You can also see the sandy beach and the deep dark shimmering sea – taking children and their families on exciting journeys, meeting many of their favurite characters and stories along the way.

Excited yet? Oh but that’s not all! For the first time ever at the centre as a part of this brand new exhibition for A World inside a Book – The Gruffalo, Dragons and other Creatures experience, there will also be a gallery displaying Axel’s original artwork. Axel was kind enough to lend DISCOVER some of his finest creations. So all visitors will be able to see his work process of bringing lots of the UK’s favourite characters to life on the page. This might even encourage some kids to start thinking about their artistic careers too.

The Children’s Centre will be running a year- long programme including Julia and Axel inspired events for 0-3s, film screenings and regular visits from The Gruffalo, Stick Man, Zog and The Highway Rat. And on Saturday 11 November, Julia and Axel will be at the centre from 11am – 1.30pm, including a book signing.

The Smartest Giant in Town is my fave. I used to read this to my eldest, 10 years ago now. I'm delighted to say I'm still reading it to our newest little tot! - I remembered the voice I put on for the Giant and a funny tune I made up to go along with his song! - she loves it just as much as my eldest daughter did, it's a real pleasure to keep the story alive!
