Parents in the classroom: Why should we visit?

A week or so ago, there was an open afternoon at school. Parents are invited in the classroom to see their children in their classes doing what they do on a Monday afternoon. The children are then allowed to show you their work, and the great thing is that you sit together and look at that work together.

It’s lovely to ask them to show you their favourite thing, the topic they loved or something they are really proud of.

My five year old showed me a book he is writing. He had earnt 2 house points for his independent writing and was very excited about it.

My daughter showed me some French parts of the body, and colours.

The eldest showed me some wonderful art; a tiger in the jungle which he had just finished, and then his literacy and numeracy books. It was especially good for him as is not always very confident in his ability. He just doesn’t believe in himself, and to praise his work while we were looking through his tray together felt very positive.

Parents in the classroom: what’s the point?

It gives me a glimpse into their world of school. It has changed a bit since I was there.

Of course, not all parents can come, or make the effort to, but for me it helps me understand their days a little better and gives me some insight into what it is like to sit in those classrooms with their class mates and their teachers.

If you are offered a similar opportunity try, do try and use it to help understand your child just that little bit better.
