If you go down to the woods today,
You’re sure of a big surprise.
If you go down to the woods today,
You’d better go in disguise.
For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain because
Today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic.
Picnic time for teddy bears;
The little teddy bears are having a lovely time today.
Watch us catch them unawares,
And see them picnic on their holiday.
See them gaily gad about.
They love to play and shout,
They never have any cares.
At six o’clock their mummies and daddies
Will take them home to bed
Because they’re tired little teddy bears.
This was (and still is) one of my favourite childhood songs, it holds so many secrets and marvellous tales. Who knew Teddy Bear’s enjoyed picnics? Well if you think about it, and I draw your attention to a certain lovable bear named Yogi Bear, it’s not that surprising is it?
One thing I love doing with my twin daughters on a sunny, lazy afternoon is creating a Teddy Bear’s picnic which we can all sit and enjoy together.
The children love helping me get the food together for the teddies to enjoy so with that in mind I keep it very simple.
What do teddy bears like to eat?
Honey, obviously!
But that’s not all. Luckily for mum’s all over the world teddy bears are a nutritious lot and insist on eating savoury first. Honest they do apparently the teddy bear mums are quite strict about that.
Savoury ideas
We started our picnic with ham sandwiches and used a teddy bear cutter to cut them to shape. The teddies loved them! You’ll notice this does leave quite a bit of ‘waste’ unless you have a grown up close by happy to indulge.
We bought some cheesestrings and made ‘spahetti’ out of them by unravelling and placing on a plate.
We took a step back in time to the 1970’s as Teddy Bears like going back to their old favourites. Mummy cut some cubes of cheese and some cubes of pineapple and the girls pushed one and one on to cocktail sticks and placed them in a pretty bowl.
We had sausage rolls and cocktail sausages.
We had cucumber strips, carrot sticks and baby tomatoes served with delicious dips.
And a selection of our favourite crisps too, cheese puffs, salt and vinegar sticks and prawn cocktails too.
Dessert ideas
This is where the Teddies really woke up and got excited after all who doesn’t love pudding?
We made some rainbow kebabs, we bought some Barny Bears, and colourful biscuits.
We made some Rocky Road and cut into teddy bear portions.
We bought some toffee flavoured popcorn and we also had a small Victoria Sponge and decorated with some fresh strawberries.
Tips for the best Teddy Bear Picnic
- Keep it simple.
- You don’t have to make anything, most of the above can be bought ready made.
- Find a place in the shade and check there are no ant nests around!
- Lock the dog indoors whilst you are setting up to avoid any food going missing ;)

It's a lot of fun Jennifer and the children love it. Plus it makes a great afternoon pastime in the summer

I'd never heard of the Teddy Bear Picnic before I moved here. I love it. Great tips!
