Little star presents....Top Trumps: the handbag essential!

When I was a kid, I remember how much I LOVED my Top Trumps…

So much so, that I actually still have them – rescued from my parents shed where they had gathered mould, damp, and goodness knows what in the years I had discarded them *poor things*

But they have a new lease of life now, along with the newer versions, they are being played with by my kids.

We were sent a few packs of the new top trumps to review; Disney Monsters University, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles, Disney Planes, Top Gear and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I couldn’t have been happier to find out what they had done with an old favourite of mine

What are they?

Do I really need to explain what Top Trumps are? Doesn’t everyone already know?!?! In case you have been living in some parallel universe; Top Trumps is a card game where you have a theme running through the pack. Each card represents a character/scene, etc from that theme. Each card has different characteristics which are ranked. You call out a characteristic, if yours is higher than your opponents, you win their card. The winner is the on who gets all the cards. Simple, and strangely addictive.

What did the kids think?

Each one of these sets has been a hit with the kids; the loved their top trumps before they get them, and they love them more now. I always stick a couple of packs in the handbag to keep them entertained when we are out, whether its visiting friends or just popping to a cafe for a drink. They are also ideal entertainment in the car, on the plane, anywhere really.

The Top Gear pack was a MAHOOSIVE hit with Stuntboy; he even gives the cars he sees out and about a Top Gear Cool Rating now. He knows Mummy’s naff Ford Focus is a 4 and is NOT impressed either… *not all good then, we can’t afford an Aston Martin*

What did Mum think?

I love them; its one of the few games I am happy to sit down and play with the kids. No idea why. Perhaps its nostalgia, perhaps its the analyst in me – I love the stats…maybe that’s it! ;-) I am also of the mind that they are teaching my kids too; understanding bigger numbers, learning how to loose gracefully…all valuable life lessons. Stuntboy needs to work on his graceful losing, but we are getting there :-D

Overall 9/10

I wouldn’t be without a pack of Top Trumps. I only marked from down slightly because some of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid cards are encouraging my son to do things that I would rather he didn’t, but I am probably jut being a 40-year old prude ;-)

We even managed to entertain the kids with a Top Trump or two at one of Daddy’s cycling events last week *saved*
