7 top tips for dating as a single parent

The idea of dating as a single parent might be a little daunting. How do you know if you’re ready? And if you are ready, where do you start? Here are some basic tips to make your journey back into dating as easy as possible.

Be honest

It’s OK not to feel ready to start dating again. If you feel pressured or afraid of being alone, you won’t be able to have a positive experience. Ask yourself if you really want to let someone into your life and, if you don’t, give yourself a bit more time.

Think about what you want

Now that you have been single for a while, you’ll have the chance to think about what it is you want from your next relationship. Only you can know what your needs are and who you would like to share your experiences with. Once you’ve got an idea of the kind of person you’d like to meet, it’ll be much easier to find them.

Talk to your children

If your children are old enough to understand, talk to them about your decision to begin dating again. Being introduced to the idea without being consulted first may make them feel uneasy or, at worst, angry. They’ve been used to having you all to themselves, so break the news gently.

Are you over your ex?

You don’t necessarily have to discuss your dating plans with your ex-partner, however you do have to make sure you’re over them before you start looking for someone new. Long-term relationships have a habit of lingering on in the mind even once they’re over – make sure it’s truly a fresh start and you’re not harbouring any hopes of reconciliation.

Tell your friends

Your friends, whether single or married, are your key to meeting new people. Let them know you’re looking for someone new and they’ll likely fall over themselves to help you, whether by throwing a party or helping you set up a profile at eHarmony.co.uk. They’ll also be able to support you if things get tough and help you stay on track in your search for love.

Go Online

Nowadays there’s more than just a few ways to meet people and online dating in the UK is getting more popular all the time. Flexible and easy to use, it’s ideal for busy people with lots of commitments and allows you the best chance of meeting a wide variety of people.

Team up

Other single parents will know how it feels to be juggling childcare and a search for love so enlist each other’s help. You can organise a babysitting rota for dates or just give each other a bit of listening support from time to time. With help from a strong network of people in a similar situation, you’ll be able to feel you’re not alone and strengthen some friendships while you look for love.

Pleasant article! My mom is a solitary guardian and since she and my father separated she's been willing for another accomplice however is excessively terrified and doesn't know where, making it impossible to begin…
