Kids reading: How to encourage them

Have you ever wondered how to encourage kids reading? Well here are some great resources to help you, from some wonderful sites and parent bloggers globally. We look so you don't have to :-D

I am a librarian – qualified at that.

Therefore I know the power of a good book, and a good read, both for myself and for my kids. There is nothing more satisfying than burying your nose in a book; unless its encouraging your kids to bury their noses in a book…getting kids reading is a passion of mine.

From a very early age it is important to encourage our children to read, it makes such a difference to their successes in life, and their enjoyment of that life too. We have written on the blog ourselves about encouraging kids to read, specifically around eBooks, but there are many other ways we can get our kids to pick up a book and have fun – even from as young as toddlers. In fact, we can read books to our babies as well, we did; my daughter was “reading” with us at six months. She had a favourite book even then….

My five top tips are:

  • Start them young
  • Let them lead
  • Link books to other activities, from crafts to maths and everything else in between
  • Join a local library as early as you can
  • Don’t be afraid to use technology to aid your reading journey, don’t be afraid of it, use it to compliment the “real” books.

I am sure that many of you have already seen resources, or written posts on this too – why not share them with us in this list below? I shall tweet, pin and spread the love for anything on my Parenting Tips board:

I shall also pin to my Books for kids board too. I have over 74,000 followers so help to give you all some great exposure:

So, without further ado, let’s get kids reading!

Helen is a mum to two, social media consultant, and website editor; and this site is (we think) the only Social Enterprise parenting magazine! Since giving up being a business analyst when juggling travel, work and kids proved too complicated, she founded KiddyCharts so she could be with her kids, and use those grey cells at the same time. KiddyCharts has reach of over 1.1million across social and the site. The blog works with big family brands (including travel) to help promote their services, as well as offering free resources to parents of kids under 10. It gives 51%+ profits to Reverence for Life, who fund a number of important initiatives in Africa, including bringing running water and basic equipment to a school in Tanzania. Helen has worked as a digital marketing consultant (IDM qualified) with various organisations, including Channel Mum, Truprint, Talk to Mums, and Micro Scooters. She loves to be creative in the brand campaigns she works on. Get in touch TODAY!
